Audio Book

Today the digital versions hold the largest market share, and the old tapes are quickly disappearing off the shelves. There are many companies that specialize in selling books to listen to instead of to read. Just searching the internet for an audio book will result in thousands of found items.

There are thousands of different books that have been recorded and with each new release another audio book is also released. Although the industry reports the audio version sales to be in the billions, they are still not quite as popular as the standard soft cover book. A big factor here is probably the price since and audio book is normally higher priced than the soft cover book. It is expected though, that recorded books will continue with their rise in popularity and this assumption is based on many facts.

One advantage of an audio book over a regular standard printed book is that it is possible to follow a book and do another chore at the same time. For example, someone can do the ironing and listen to a book or do housework and listen to an educational book recording and learn. Another advantage is that they enable blind people to hear just about any book they want, a modern bestseller, old classic or educational text book, and this in turn increases literacy and education among the disabled population. They are then no longer left out.

Another benefit of an audio book is that it is in reality much more environmentally friendly. In order to produce an audio book, a publishing company does not need enormous amounts of paper or ink, no need to print hundreds of thousands of books and then transport them with trucks or planes, which pollute.

It is logical that a recorded book has clear advantages over printed books, but, nonetheless, printed books are still the preferred method by companies to get a new book out to its customers. As already mentioned once before, a paper back book is cheaper to buy than an audio CD, even though an audio cd is cheaper to produce. This price difference, if not due to production costs, can only be reasonably explained by the fact that the printed book sells better and that the increased sales compensate for the higher production costs.

Once a book has been chosen to be recorded, there is then the choice between an abridged and unabridged version. The so-called unabridged audio book is an exact reading of any work, which means it is read and recording exactly as it is seen written. The abridged version has been shortened by parts of the book being left out or is more summarized. Many books come in both versions.
